According to Google I only have one measly backlink to my Sketchbook site!

How can this be? I have exchanged links with several sites and I regularly post to forums and comment on sites to get my url out there. Don't these kind of things count as backlinks? Have I misunderstood backlinks? (probably knowing me! )

:detective:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated...

Well, I think only sites that are indexed in google will be seen by google. So that means that some of the sites that link to you are not in google. I know for my sites that I have many backlinks and google doesn't show them all.

Not really as I only accepted reciprocal links with sites that ARE in Google, I manually check sites before I put a link to them, making sure they are in Google and are suitable... :s

Google delivers only a percentage of total back links with the link: operator. You will get a more accurate read out with yahoo's linkdomain:

Thanks for the linkdomain: tip for Yahoo! Didn't know about that.

Actually quite interesting to see who's linking to you and why. Found a few odd linkages to me...

I got the same problem with my site CJCM and IT. Only Google doesn't show any backlinks. Apparently if I checked the link manually using
link: www.cjcm2u.com (notice a space in between : and I got 229 backlinks reported by Google. If there is no space in between, I get 0 backlink... no wonder my page rank is till zero.

interestingly, my other site http://www.desaminium.com only has 107 backlinks (as of today) and it is already PR1.

The only difference, Google had verified it found Desaminium, but not CJCM and IT (I checked this using Google's webmaster tools site status).. :helpsmilie:

Hi Ronnie,

Well Google doesn't show all the backlinks that they see. But I'd avoid doing recipricol linking, Google down-graded their value long time ago.

Some link popularity checker tools that I use:

marketleap.com/publinkpop/
submitexpress.com/linkpop/index.html

I have a PR4 site that has 1500 backlinks according to Yahoo! and none according to Google, so yea, Google can be a little *****. Just use yahoo to check real backlinks.

I show 298 inlinks, most of them coming from the same domain(s), but still more than you'll see in google.

As most members have mentioned, Google only display a small set of backlinks. Therefore, always use Yahoo or MSN for checking backlinks. Alternatively, you can try out the Yahoo API Powered Backlink Analyzer

No reason to avoid it if quality comes your way.
