Just post in forums or sign up for link exchange directory, maybe linkmarket.com? Thats just a few I know of.

Yes it does help.. but you get like mad links when you start to slow down. My account has over 200 awaiting links. Blah I cant even catch up to them.

You have to be careful not to exchange too many links. I heard there is a penalty if one of your pages is a "link farm" (a page with so many links).

Do a limited Link exchanges, butLinks above 80 in a page can give you a penalty

There are some sites that you can give a review to or those that have a 'submit an article' option so that you can exchange links with them.

I'm doing some content writing gigs on my own and I submit an article at www.articlesphere.com. They can give a backlink to your site our your blog. Amazingly when I key in my name on Google. Viola, my name is already on the web

Some of my first time clients sometimes come up to me and say "Oh, I already saw some of your writing samples at Article Sphere." Somehow, it does adds to my credibilty.

there are a lot of sites where you can request link exchange. And you can always try to contact other related websites and ask for a link exchange!
