I don't remember for sure, but I think it was around 1998 or so. I know it was after Yahoo was founded in 1995.

dohh i should have taken the name google in 98', I wonder what happen if they had planned it and someone had taken the name.

This is an interesting thing to consider. Realistically, I think they would go with another, similar sounding name.
