Exactly, I started offering this service because I saw and still see people paying for it, but I do recommend directory submission on the website itself and mention that once your listed in a directory its a matter for time only until search engines pick the link up and index your website.

I guess that answers your question illusion, you can get search engines to index your website with numerous ways besides submitting to them directly, actually its recommended that you let search engines like Google find your website, this will mostly happen when they find your link somewhere on a website, either on a directory, article you submitted somewhere or a press release that links to your website, or by a link you placed on a friends website
