I tried one company (no longer exist :S) They gladly took my money but made no difference to my rankings/pr, etc. Be cautious

Your rankings can just get better by submitting to directories and posting on forums. If you have your meta info set correctly, you should be fine. You will notice changes.

Used a very well known one... the contract was very large. The result was nowhere near 1/10th of the cost.

Are you saying the results were not worth 1/10th of the cost? Meaning they stink at SEO?

The larger companies tend to only take care of their clients that make up 95% of their revenue which in some cases may be only 10 - 20 out of their 400 - 600 clients. We offer seo services that range between $500 per month and up depending on the competitive nature of your industry. We have some large clients, but are very careful to make sure we don't overbook ourselves. This insures the clients we do have get the attention they deserve. Since you're a member of this forum, I'd be willing to give you some free advice to help your rankings in the short term while you shop around. You can email or call. PM me and I'll get you some additional details.

I'm not trying to sell you (although I wouldn't turn you away either). We always help out members of forums we post in for free to help the community overall. I'm not going to give you an trade secrets or anything, but I can advise you regarding the most common and easiest methods of improving your rankings and if you decided to use our services in the future, that's great. If not, you'll at least gain some basic knowledge.

LOL. Sorry - I didn't realize that was ambiguous! What I meant was that it was NOT worth it. They were terrible (unattentive, far from experts) and not only were they just not that good, they forced us to use their name in all of our meta tags and whatnot (we ended up not using it, but they fought us on it). It was so dumb.

I was concurrently taking a free SEO class online and it was interesting to see the similarities and differences among what they were doing. Let me just say that the free SEO class got 1,000 times better results (I optimized other pages at the same time for a test. Boy did they hate that I wouldn't let them touch those pages!)

Having been through a year of that (it was a one year contract), I can honestly say that there is no need to hire an SEO company unless you can't do the work yourself (which I can understand), but in that case, there are so many smaller, cheaper, more capable SEO firms (or even one-man-shows) that could do better work. Heck, for the price we paid, we could have hired someone full-time, taught them what to do, and gotten far better results. SEO isn't magic - it's very methodical, logical techniques to make YOUR individual pages more relevant to different searches queries.

I would be happy to answer any other questions, but I would rather not mention the company as that isn't my style.
