Hey,

As I run a forum for Directory Owners and Users. do you use directories? do you find them to help? Or are they just a waste of time?

I submit my sites to any directory when I've got the time.
It seems like every other day, new directories are launched. I just can't seem to keep up...

I submit my websites to any directory I come across and If it's intentional I would go to niche websites like "Cooking Directories" and a few hundred visitor surely come for the relevant content.

(IMHO) Everyone uses them and finds them useful. Many of the most popular and profitable websites that most people wouldn’t consider a “Directory” are arguably a directory or at least directory like in many ways.

I think of these websites as basically being directories with some sort of extra added value.

It could be argued that Monster.com is a jobs directory. About.com is an articles directory. Hotels.com is a hotels directory + booking engine, etc.

The word “Directory” is often associated to those terrible links websites that are absolutely useless. We have all searched for something and accidentally stumbled upon one of those. The content was scraped from the ODP or the Google SERPS or it’s full of worthless and off topic websites.

But if you think about… Many websites that are product review sites are actually a directory of product reviews, etc. It’s just a small twist on the most basic directory idea.

Widget Directory + Reviews = Widget Review Website.

(IMO) The more focused the directory, the more potential it has to be useful to someone. The more features and value you add to your directory (Shopping cart, Photos, Product reviews, Articles, News, Blog, Forum, etc, the less it will look like your basic “Directory” and more like an industry portal or something else.

Aloha,
Dave.

Hawaii,

That is a great point. It's exactly what I am trying to do with RadioStationdb.com. It's a directory, but it's more than that. I have a few ideas how to expand the content beyond basic listings, but it is going to take some time.

It's a good way to get the spiders to your sites initially I find, also helps with keyword ranking on certain terms. Although not weighted as much as proper organic linking

Definately worth submitting to about 25 good directories (free ones) :alucard:

There are some niche directories out there that can pass some awsome trust along to submitted sites. I continue to use them with every new client site that fits.
