How do you explain SEO to your clients?

Hey, I was wondering how you convince your (soon-to-be) clients about the benefits of SEO.
Let's say your client has a website, coded with many nested tables. An out-dated design and very poor SEO. What do you tell them?

just talk from your own and clients perspective..

I explain that most people are looking on the internet for products they want to by (at least read about them) and they use the search engines for it.
Throw in some numbers about 40% of the people not looking past the first 4 results etc. etc.

That's what I'd most likely do too. Explain from a visitors perspective and how they will reach the website. Probably say that SEO is critical for them to be a top seller as without it, you might as well not advertise at all. :P

Statistics with proof will most certainly help too.
