I've heard that Google has been ignoring the nofollow tag, regardless of the fact that they suggested it to webmasters. May have changed by now, though.
any references of the fact that they do?... seems important to know
The nofollow tags are a real harm and should be understood by every webmasters.
From a blog owner's point of view, the nofollow link tag could be seen as an important tool in the fight against spam links whereas from a person who is working on link building then it is going to take him forever to get a PR.

Bingo. I've got a blog that I haven't posted in for about 6 months, but was very popular when it was active. About 2 months ago, I started getting about 30 spam comments per day. Even after I turned off comments, I was still getting them somehow. So I went into the Wordpress code and actually removed all traces of the comment form.
