Mod Re-write using Apache helps form search engine friendly hyperlinks and filenames on websites, which is always a bonus.

On the other hand there's a piece of software available specifically to help vBulletin with SEO. This is called (ironically) vBSEO and can be purchased for a small fee and does the same job as Mod-Rewrite, only to a higher standard.

Depending on how well your forums are SEO friendly, depends on how far the spiders from Google are able to look properly and index them in the search.

I've tried this and it has worked for me every time. Just pay $10-20 for one week link on a PR7 website to your page, and woohla. Although, the PR7 linking page should be related to your site.
