*Create quality content that is unique to your site (Don't buy articles or rip off other peoples work, it won't help)
*Make sure that the keywords you want to compete for are in your page, and properly used.
*Find other people who have websites related to your topic. They don't have to be direct competitors, but at least somewhat related. See if you can get a link to your site from their site. (Note on this, directories and link farms are bad, don't waste your time. For the most part, using Social Networking sites is also not worth the time).
If you create good quality content, then google will like your site and your rankings will go up.
Having a well formatted robots.txt file, and submitting a sitemap to all of the major search engines can also help you out.
