I want to exchange links with sites that are relevant to my own (web and graphic design), but that doesn't make sense to me because what designer is going to want to advertise a competitor (and why would I want to)?

It's not about to advertise your competitors but to get "relevant links" coming from other related site to yours. I advise you to get a three-way link exchange.

It's not that your advertising your competitor but your placing quality links on your site and it will be the same for him...
In cases that a certain user, on your competitor site, needs more resources, a link from your competitor site will drive that traffic to your site....

It doesn't make sense to you because it's not supposed to make sense, and it never was.

There's a school of thought that suggests that, by advertising a competitor's website, you appear to be more open and honest with your users and they'll become customers...but it's at best a theory and, like you, I don't subscribe to it. It doesn't make sense; you don't invite people in the front door to your business and then give them a map to your closest competitor's place once they get in. It's silly, and always was.

You also don't want to exchange links. Good sites generate good, organic links. Bad ones result to shortcuts like link exchange. Link out when it's relevant to your user, not to some dope out in Awfulbania who thinks that inbound links are SEO because some sellout blackhat told everyone so.

One answer to this question is right. Can you figure out which one? I'll give you a hint - it's the only one that explained why, and not just what to do.

You are right your competition will not want to trade links with you. You should focus on building links through article submissions, blog postings, and directory submissions.
