Ive noticed that these are popular with people. Ive never had a sig. I presume you all have them as a) folks can click the link in a forum and b) ....

well i dont know if b) exists. Is b) - It improves the amount of backlinks to your site

?

If so is it quite a worthwhile pursuit and also is there any good 'sig on forums' strategies?

thanks

ps when i mean strategies i mean 'is there a list of forums that have a good pr and let folks have sigs'

I wouldnt be spamming. I can post all day long on forums (and i do) and have something to say generally. If adding a sig helps then i will 'slip it in' (oooer)

Of course it could help. It provides inbound links, a little traffic and it can boost your keyword rankings as well...

If you are interested in the semi-qualified visitors it can send then it can be very useful.
As a SE promotional strategy it's a lot of work for little benefit

Forum signatures are great for new sites, but I would not add that as a SEO strategy. If you are an active forum poster, ad a signature, but don’t post just to have a signature!

Actually, I was an avid poster on a few forums before I started our site. I added the link to my signature and the back links showed up on Google the very next day. I received some traffic too but none of it was targeted so it brings me no clients.

What I did notice is Google bot started hitting my site everyday and hope it had some effect on my # of one way back links. Not sure if it does any good because I don't see how Harley Davidson and Diesel Truck forums relate to a Benefits Law Firm... But at least I went from being spidered once a week to everyday by the major SE's. SO I got that going for me...

Forum sig is a good method of gaining backlinks, its a good way of advertising a website.
If you perform helpfully and contribute very well in a related forum, readers may like your post and from there take a click on your sig.

I'm surprised that more forums don't nofollow signature links.

If you are active in forums regardless, it won't hurt adding a sig or two.

As Hirst said, if you're interested in visitors that are at least tangentally targeted, it can be useful.

For SEO reasons, it can work if a) you're lucky, b) you have a lot of posts (which generally only comes from being a useful poster and c) you put a lot of time into it.
