Pagerank number on a toolbar in most cases is not that important.
Don't concentrate on raising the PR. Especially lately, when Google shows all kinds of goofy PR results.
My opinion is that Google purposely alters various results (like PR, links, etc) to manipulate the way webmasters and seos think and act, but most importantly stop link sales.
I have two websites (both are 5 years old, lots of quality backlinks, very few junk links) with PR0 and the rank in the top 3 SERPs of Google, explain that, if you think PR is an important factor for rankings. I get a lot of traffic a lot of buyers, and all with PR0!!!
Bottom line for me is, concentrate on getting nice, rich and unique content on your website on a regular basis, "distribute" it and get all the quality incoming links you can get, and you will not fail.
