I find that measuring how good a site is by how many other sites link to it is stupid.

In my experience, when my website is better, more creative and updated more often than other similar sites - they aren't going to link to it. No chance. Even if they have over 10 links to other sites which are terrible and never get updated.

Why 'help' something that is better than them? It is backwards thinking.
Like an actor who only appears in small, useless movies, giving $10 000 to Tom Cruise. It has to be one of the most natural human urges, to want to destroy what is above you.. or at the very least, not give a link to it !

Well, search engines gage how popular your website by how many other websites link to it. They make the rules. Not you and me.
However, this is not the only thing that Search Engines take into account. There are many. Link building is a very exhausting task and you are not likely to see the benefits for a while.

What your saying is just not true though if you have good content or services then people do link to it, think about when your stuck with some coding problem or something and somebody then posts back saying here is a link to a tutorial that will help you.

Then you have indipendant comparison sites which if your business is worthy you will be listed in and get links that way they are loads and loads of reasons why sites will link to yours if you have something worth linking to.

Your assumption is wrong from Search Engines point of view.
If two person doing SEO and meet each other on Link Exchange Platform then definitely they will proceed by one or other way because they know what Search engines Like & how it would be beneficial for their self...
