Nothing swamps my site with traffic more than after I take out an add in a magazine. I have had too much traffic at times from that & had to upgrade my host package. Free advertising doesn't do much.

press releases & magazines adds in a mag that is related to your site.
Hire a PR person too. They are worth the money if you find a good one. There are many that are not too expensive.

be patience in searching for major directories. it helps when you submit.

Do social Bookmarking, submit all your news story to social bookmarking site like digg, del.icio.us etc...

do work on Off page optimization as mentioned earlier in many posts. It is the only way to get high & quality traffic. Other sources are like PPC & social bookmarking is short term and i do not think effective one. They wud bring visitors but interested one..... NOT SURE

Why don't you try to join forums and other community sites, you can put
your links there and not only that you can also learned a lot of things from it..

Do social media optimization for your website.

so some social bookmarking and post interesting topics to attract visitors.

Update your news as much as possible...
