The only way to increase sales which will increase your profit is to get more traffic to your website, SEO but can take a while to get yourself on the frontpage if you don't know what you are doing, Google Adwords (but can get costly if you have a poor conversion rate).

I find all of this advice fascinating ... maybe I am showing how naive and ignorant I am but I am really learning a lot in this forum ... I also want to establish an online presence and want to earn money while doing so ... how do people determine what the focus of their blog will be? how do you make money with a blog?

As a fellow newbie to the forum I have to agree that there is a lot of information on here. Especially if you read some of the older threads.
To determine the focus of your blog, focus on something you know about or are interested in and start writing. With all the sites on the net chances are you won't come up with something original. No offense, but lets be honest, everything has been done. If you want to write about aglets, do it. If you want to write about Disney World, go for it. Politics, football, hairstyles of famous porn stars, the sky is the limit. Sure there may be other sites already catering to that niche, that's why you have to make yours better. Just use the old theory of find something you enjoy doing and make a job out of it.
