I voted "of course" because what company wouldn't gain as much intelligence as possible if they had the means to?

This is a great question. Which brings me to my question... what's "wrong" with having something like a link directory? It isn't cheating (when done honestly) and it's a way for someone to make money. Google isn't the "end all" in this. Maybe some people like to submit to directories and get their name out there. It's made the good guys at phpLinkDirectory some money for developing their script. Why would someone be "penalized" for this? I see other reasons for exchanging links than just getting PR.
I've personally receive quite a bit of traffic to one of my sites, just from somebody putting a link on her site (unknown to me until I tracked it). I didn't do that for Google Rank. She did it because she likes my development services and as a result it brought me more traffic. Why couldn't a link directory do the same?
I know this debate can go on and on...
Great question though. I would have to think Google reads this forum. It's indexed high and stands out. Penalized? Shouldn't be. There is so much rich content on this site that gives it much higher value than other sites. If they read it (human), they should see it's a very worthy site to index high.

Of course! As what you have just said, Google has the largest database network in world. So, for sure, Google does.

Not that it really matters. I figure Google is going to do what it wants and I am going to do what I want. I could make a full time job of optimizing my site for Google. Even a full time job of just reading blogs about Google.
The real question is: Do people who post in the links exchange forum read this forum?
Like that matters either.

i dont know but to be honest i think this topic is a little pointless google (eventually) reads everything put on the internet it can get its hands on, EVEN IF it doesnt show up in its searchs you can bet they still know about it...
So can we please just leave this now...
(if you agree please dont write a reply agreeing kinda defeats the idea....

I think people cant follow all rules...
Imagine. Do you have an opportunity to get free (very cheap) webtraffic if you accept all the rules that webportals urge? No. I think that spamming (email, ICQ etc) can not bring many paying customers - the situation is much different than a decade ago. So you can try seo (even black-hat) or paid advertisment. Both options are costly anyway- paid ads costs more.
You cant earn 1000 USD unless you have risked- paid 700 USD on adwords. How the hell can I get rich that way! In a million years?
I think I am not that experienced on seo yet but the baclinks is the chance to be successfull in longterm. So if I find out that it works, I will try to make money on it...
They say that link exchange and buying of links is spamming of webportals, lol. And what else should I do? Wait whether a mirracle happens (and website will be earning well) or not? (probably not If I do not work on it And then spending 2 hours monthly watching webstats with few hundres of visitors? Come on ...

So who thinks Google reads this forum? We all know they index www.webmaster-talk.com regularly, so their spiders have a list of every link that's ever come up in the link exchange forum. And we know that using this place violates Google's terms of service and could result in a ban because
My question is if Google uses forums like this one as a honey pot to collect data to test changes to their algorithms with?

I would agree with that. I have some domains with 0 pagerank, some with only Pr2 and despite that I receive visits. So there is a catch in pagerank anyway

Forget rules. I read something that said almost 95% of internet traffic is generated from spam.
Big search engines want you to make money for them. That's why pages from About.com and other big sites come up in the top ten when they don't have any real content. Those are sites that serve a bunch of AdSense for Google so Google doesn't really if the pages are spam. Google ascentially pays to have less quality search results. It's all about the money. It's not about the search results.
