Its struck me, as I watch the preparations for Obama's inauguration, what a circus we've turned this formerly dignified event into. People are literally scalping tickets to the inauguration event for thousands of dollars. You have more big name bands playing the event than lalapolooza, including:
Beyonce
Mary J Blige
Jon Bon Jovi
U2
Springstein
It made me a bit ill, watching Obama follow the footsteps (Train ride) of Lincoln, when I realized this man and this event has absolutly NOTHING in common with Lincoln. Lincoln was a poor and under educated man who failed at absolutely everything in his life prior to the presidency. Throughout his presidency, he was a very unpopular man, and divided the country more deeply than any president before or since. He did this by following his convictions, rather than popularity.
Perhaps the most distinguishing difference for me was Lincoln's humility and lack of ego, contrasted against Obamas swagger(Admittedly Bush also had a swagger of his own). With the leadership of our country turned into such a circus, it makes me wonder how long before we start seeing corporate sponsorship logos on the podium of white house press conferences. All in all, very disturbing.
