What site would you be talking about? If it is a site that it already being indexed, the easiest thing to do is to use Google's search bar that you can install on your site. There are other search engines that provide a search bar as well. But like I said, your site would have already been crawled by one of their spiders.
Then there are services that will provide you with Search functions, like AtomZ (pay service) and FreeFind (free, but with adverts). Both are usually just plug and play scripts -- I am not sure how they work to tell you the truth (I have always used Google's method).
There are scripts that will do the job -- but I have not found one that worked all that well. You can try places like SourceForge and HotScripts and look around there for something, or I am sure somebody here at WT might know of some that work well enough.
Another thing I just came across recently (this one is pretty kewl too) is LoopImprovements Site Search. This is a complete crawler, indexer, and search tool. Yep -- your own spider!! Details are here: That is the enterprise version, but they have a free version that will index up to 1,000 pages too. You can find that one in their download section. I have been playing around with it for just a couple of days and it is **** good.
