My guess is that you then already know HTML and CSS. These are both very easy to learn compared to PHP. Where these take months. PHP will take years. You'll also need to learn SQL and database setup. I've been using PHP for years and I still struggle with it sometimes. Although if you already know javascript then it will be much easier to learn as they are the Spanish and portuguese of spoken languages.

Really, you think Perl is "more desirable"? Perl seems like it's a total mess to me. If you want to learn a clean, nice language, try Python. I've been using it for about a year, and I love it.

I remember my first experience with PHP way back in 2001. Despite my questionable pedigree in ASP and Visual Basic, browsing an alphabetical PHP function list was enough to scare me away for years. Somehow, perusing the above list, I don't think things have improved a whole lot since then.
I know EXACTLY what he means!

Good point. I just remember seeing some website that was talking about how great Perl is, or something like that. I've never written, or probably even seen, one line of Perl.

That seems to be the consensus of the posters, you might want to read over DayliDesign Post #35, quite a bit of information there from what they have experienced.
