Have previously been doing everything in Drupal / Wordpress.
Figured it's about time to Joomla a test drive.

Something that I stumbled on is the WYSIWYG editor stripping
out HTML. Which means it ignores new line breaks and even
image inserts.

Easy fix. Go to Article Manager / Parameters and
blacklist everything EXCEPT the superadministator.
Works fine now.

And that is related to the question because????

AND the nonbreaking space is a HTML entity NOT a "tag".

Tags start with a '<' and end with a '>', entities start with a '&' (an ampersand) and end with a ';' (semicolon)

Installing a forum.

The most popular Joomla Forum software is something called Kunena.
The JED doesn't give any clue about this but if you try to download the version for Joomla 1.5 you'll find out it is not longer supported !

I then tried NinjaBoard which quite frankly sucks. There is scant documentation, it requires downloading sample data and I couldn't get it to work. So after wasting a bit of time I gave up.

I looked at Joo!BB but got no further than their website, which looks really ropey. A great example of how important it is to have a polished and professional looking website if you've got any kind of product.

Finally I discovered the "Discussion" extension.
This one was a dream. German engineering at it's best.
Simple to install, intuitive and a nicely themed default template.

Just upgraded to Joomla 2.5 and same problems with HTML stripping.

In Joomla 2.5 they have added a new tab in the Global Configuration page for "Text Filters".
Just find the Filter Group for Super User (should be the last one) and set the filter type to "No Filtering".

BUT....

That's not all.
If you are using the default TinyMCE WYSIWYG editor you also need to
go to Extensions / Plugin Manager / Editor TinyMCE and check what tags are prohibited. Probably <iframe> tags are listed so if you plan on embedding YOUTUBE videos you'll need to remove that one from the banned list.

Dump the rather pathetic TinyMCE in favor of CK Editor and if you use Firefox disable CodeMirror especially in the template editor because it is a real resource hog.

Oh and going back a while, I can absolutely, most definitely, 100% give a big thumbs up to Kunena 1.7 on Joomla! 2.5.

I was a confirmed Joomla! hater until I test flew J1.7 then J2.5 and had to review my earlier opinion of a user interface designed by geeks to be used by nerds.

Oh and if you intend to have "Front end" article writing, do NOT install Content Builder at this current time and version (0.9).

Any opinions?

I've not tried any recent Drupal versions, but I did have a much lower opinion of earlier versions of Drupal than I had of Joomla.

It just seemed unecessarily complicated and convoluted.

I started with Drupal 6 and after a while got fairly comfortable with it but it was a bit like bag of leggo blocks that you have to connect to make something useful.

You should give Drupal 7 a try, though.

I think they have made some big improvements in terms of the UI and making it easier for newbs to get up and running, fast.

The problem I see with the Drupal community is that everything is FREE, as in "free beer". Which at first sounds great, as a user. But then you find that important modules developed for version 6 haven't been upgraded to version 7 ( no incentive for 3rd party developers to do so?) and already they are working on releasing Drupal 8 !

They need some kind of market place, like an App store for Drupal modules.
It has been discussed but so far with no results.
