I've found that successfully using PHP is all about finding the right tools. I'm shocked and amazed by what PHP has built into it and I'm probably only familiar with 5% of it.

So, help me learn, what's your favorite built-in PHP functionality?

Mine lately has been the $objdom class that can read RSS, XML... pretty much anything structured.

Favorite function?? Depends on what I work. If I work with strings it is explode, str_pos, validation is preg_match (preg_match_all), preg_replace and many others.

Interesting question.
