Before you ask, I'm not referring to a dating service...

I am planning a launch of a commuters website and I need a script for carpool matching. I've asked on a couple other forums but the answers were real vague including a couple code snipets even though I said I have no experience with PHP...no real help.

Basically what I want to know is if anyone knows where to find a matching script that I can alter to use for carpool matching. I have thought about paying a freelancer but, paying for a script or finding it for free would be more in my budget.

I'm not really sure if it would be best to do it in PHP or not, but I'm going to use PHPNuke for my site and would like to keep all coding in the same language. However if you guys think that it would be best in another language then let me know.

Something you're asking for is algorithmically very difficult to do correctly. Dealing with all different kinds of permutations in any programming language is going to be hard. Then, taking into account preference of each individual and things like that make the problem even more complicated.

That is the reason you've probably been getting pretty vague answers. I think that hiring a freelancer is probably the way to go. Even if you do find a script, it won't do exactly what you want and you're going to need to customize it. I'm assuming you can't do that yourself given that you said you have no programming experience.

Can i just verify that when you refer to carpool your talking about matching cars based on peoples preferences?

What I want is a script where people can enter their beginning and ending addresses and the script will match people based on who has the closest route.
