Well, first they are both free and widely available. Second putting together a registration program is quick and simple with these technologies. Third they are fast technologies, thats why everyone uses them.

4th, they're not developed by Microsoft and have far fewer vulnerabilities to be exploited and hacked.

PHP and mySQL don't have "far fewer" vulnerabilities then ASP and msSQL. Saying that just because they are developed by Microsoft is hypocrisy.

Give me an example of a worm that was as devastating to mySQL as Slammer/Saphire was to msSQL and withdraw the comment.

Just take a search on BugTraq and you'll see that mySQL actually has more exploits then msSQL does.

I'd say they are pretty much equal. Just because msSQL is a Microsoft product doesn't automatically mean that it is insecure. Some of the largest websites use ASP because it does so well under great loads. mySQL is one of the underdogs in the database world.

I'm a PHP guy myself, it's just a pet-peeve of mine when people pick on Microsoft for no reason.

Very good point Chroder. I have a bad taste for MS for web services ever since I happened to have a client why back who's hosting company (XO) was horrible when it came to managed servers. Their Windows 2000 machine with SQL crashed almost monthly (it especially liked holidays), was hit by Code Red, Slammer, and a couple of other nasties (host didn't install any patches at all ... of course they also charged for database backups which it turned out they were not doing).

It probably is more accurate to say there are a wealth bad hosts providing Microsoft services. MS gets a bad name because of them. MS products kept properly up to date with recent patches can be as secure as other systems... it's just an over abundance of MS users not patching that creates the real issues with MS.
