The four lenses I have right now, I paid about another $3,000 combined; there was another $1,300 zoom that was stolen, and a $450 prime I sold. So while there's still plenty to be jealous of in the pro cameras - 22 megapixels instead of 13, 10 frames per second instead of 3, wifi and gps - probably anybody else would think I'm insane to even hesitate to say yes.
If it comes down to gear, lighting is the most important, although I don't use lighting gear, but then after that optics have more influence on photo quality than anything else. The last camera body I had before this one was a lot less professional, but with mostly the same lenses, the pictures look pretty similar; the new one is just able to capture a wider range of them.
Now the trouble comes from the fact that most compact cameras - film or digital - have a built in lens and that's that. They're almost all pretty good, but if you look at two photos side by side, one with a compact, all in one camera and another through a lens that cost thousands of dollars and doesn't even zoom ... it won't be much of a contest. On the other hand, most people don't do A/B comparisons like that; a pretty good lens is going to take pretty good pictures. There's always something better, but there's also good enough. Unfortunately that's subjective and different from person to person.
But here's an interesting comparison. I used to have a D60, a 6 megapixel that came out in early 2001, and I've replaced it with a 5D, a 13 megapixel camera that came out in mid 2006. In computer terms that's millions of years apart. Here's one photo from each, both shot through the same lens ... can you tell which came out of the better camera?

lol 2nd one is the canon 5D.
You plan on upgrading to a 5D mark II?

The Sony Cyber-Shot is a good brand camera, in my opinion.

Basic decision would be: maximum image quality? Go DSLR. Choose one with a good viewfinder (the cheaper ones aren't really good from that point of view).
Canon 40D is probably the best deal around at the moment. Cost about 1300, and now the price went down to 850. 10 megapixels, more than enough.
If you want it more compact, again: ease of use of maximum image quality?
There are some higher end compacts like the the sigma dp1, than there's a higher end ricoh, the panasonic lumix lx3/ and its Leica brother. If you want a good compact, get one that shoots RAW.
There's a new format, micro four thirds, like the Panasonic G1. You can change lenses, but the viewfinder is electronic. I don't know if that's good. I'd rather buy a DSLR>

I have a Sony Cyber-Shot and it does a great job, just point and shoot. I'm looking at upgrading, possibly to a Cannon SLR.

I am currently using Nikon. Very happy with it so far. Colour reproduction is almost perfect.

I use a camera to generate an income, I have been successfully doing that for 40 years.
The absolute best camera out there, is undisputed !! - LEICA - that has been the rolls-royce of cameras for over 75 years !
I use, and just love the Digital Camera I now own and use everyday, for over 4 years - Panasonic ! It is light, inexpensive ($500) but the main reason I puchased this camera, was the lens! 35mm - 420mm made by LEICA !!
I have posted some of the movies, of Eskimos out on the ocean ice, breaking trail, (chopping ice @ 30 below zero for 15 miles !) 9 people have 4 weeks to clear & smooth out 15 miles of trail through rugged arctic ice. Twenty foot tall pressure ridges, chop right through them !!
I need a camera that is rugged and can withstand the brutal arctic !!
I am quite satisified !! And.. .. for what it is worth, here's my 2 cents - There is NO SUCH THING as 'perfect color'. Warm or Cool are the two accepted norms !!

You should check out the Nikon P80 or Nikon P90. I own a P80. It's an easy to use ultrazoom compact digital camera. I am VERY happy with it. It takes great pictures and is very easy to use.

Created with a $200 dollar Sony - 10 mega pixel out on the ice @ 40 below zero !!
This crew is chopping a trail for 10 miles through the ice, 12 hour days, back breaking work - no pay ! The only reward is you get to eat.. .. and NO ONE.. .. ever complains !!

This is the best advice I think! And yes, trying out a few ones on the store can really help you choose what kind of camera to buy.
I honestly dream to have a Nikon D60 or D90 someday. You might want to check that out too.

THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT TO CONSIDER: what ?? are you going to do with these photographs you create ?
I am out to prove a point, and I have proven it on over 58 photo forums.
You do not need to spend 1,000's of dollars to create professional looking saleable images. If you are using your photographs for personal use, albums etc.. then it is a no brainer, You do not need a Cannon or a Nikon to produce professional results. don't buy into that false ego hype !
I have been working as a pro for over 40 years, I make tons of bux from photography. I have been requested to document an Inupiaq Whale Hunt this year in Barrow Alaska, These images are going into a book that is being produced for the North Slope Borough. I need professional results !
this is what I choose for this assignment, JUST TO PROVE A POINT !!
Everyone has a pencil at home. Everyone knows how to use a pencil ! BUT .. .. .. how many people can draw an exact likeness of a person or an individual accurately ?? It is a skill !! The same is true in photography, It doesn't matter what you have for a camera, A pro can work miracles with virtually any camera, even at 40 below zero, miles out on the ocean ice.
The manufacturer says this camera can only function between +32 degrees above zero to 130 degrees above zero.. Here are images created well below zero !
AGAIN I ASK: What is the original poster going to do with these images you create? That will determine which type of camera you should purchase.
I just got a new job, I need a car, which one should I purchase ?? a farrarri or a corvette ? even though a volkswagen will do the exact same thing !

I'm also shopping around for a camera and I was debating between Nikon and canon. when I visited the Nikon site I saw that they were pushing a D90 Nikon camera. I looked at their demo and it looked like a good camera. My only concern was the price; I think it was about $1K.

If you can't get a DSLR, I recommend the Canon SX100IS. After I did all the research, I found it to be the fastest point and shoot - that is, for a point and shoot, it has the least shutter lag. It's also got 10x zoom, it's 8 megapixels, and it has a larger than standard size chipset for greater image quality (less pixel compression).

What ever makes you think that cannon is the best ??? That is absurd !
for over 75 years.. undisputed - ONLY ONE NAME can boast of that claim.
But you are all missing the entire point of photography, it is not about the camera. It is about learning how to consistently produce (with any camera) well composed images. SUBJECT MATTER - not brand names !!
10,000 for camera & lenses ? That is ridiculous ! UNLESS your making that kind of money in your use of that equipment (monthly) , YOU do not need to spend huge amounts of money- to create professional quality photographs.
for less than $200.00 - that is all it cost for this 10 megapixel camera, and produced these outstanding results.
QUALITY in COMPOSITION is the MAIN issue. NOT BRAND NAMES !!
