Hi!

So I have a small (but growing) web design business growing. I just landed a huge customer! I'm really excited. They would like a 12 - 15 page website built in joomla, with a slideshow and clean, crisp graphics. Professional. They are a pretty big local company, and only have one main competition .

I have never used joomla. I have some experience in wordpress, php, and other CMS, but I have just never gotten around to using joomla yet. My ? is, how much would YOU charge a customer working with joomla. Whats the going rate...just so I don't under or over charge. I am in the process of playing around with joomla, and it doesn't seem very difficult for me to create what they want.

Please, any tips, or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. (:

- Shante

The going rate is whatever YOU charge and x number of pages don't really come into it with a CMS, you build a template and that can do 1 page, 10 pages or a million pages.

Hmm...well, a slideshow, clean crisp graphics - this is easy stuff and certainly very doable in Wordpress too. Perhaps you could convince the to move to Wordpress where you have more experience.

You might want to remind them to choose a developer, not a CMS

Great read. Thanks!

@Shante

Like the others say - just calculate your standard rate. Ensure you experiment with the Joomla demo and explore its file structure so you know what you are in for.

Since the customer 'want' to use Joomla CMS, you will have to provide what they want.. In this case, try outsource from competent Joomla template designers and extension developers..

I set up my first site in Joomla recently and it didn't take too long to figure out the basics. Possibly, coming from a Drupal/Wordpress background helped in that I already had a grasp of common CMS approaches.

One thing to keep in mind is that the default JavaScript library for Joomla is Mootools. If you (like me) prefer working with jQuery you'll need to add the library to your template.

You'll also have to make a choice about which version of Joomla you want to use. Joomla has an interesting approach to version support. Vers 1.6 is the current version but many (possible most) people are still using Vers 1.5
My understanding is that Vers 1.7 is near stable.
It's important because I don't think upgrading in Joomla is anywhere near as painless as it is in Wordpress, but I could be wrong.
