disaster, I was doing regular link building, by posting sig messages in forum, only with relevant post, that i hoped would be useful and readable, a few
here and there, webmaster-talk for talking about web, a few others for talking other topics. Then I get sulked in to using sitepoint forum, at already 1000 on the net, it made more sense to post there, then say webmaster-talk which is bit further down the google ranking. What happens, sitepoint changes the're policy, all message links a unreadable if a user isn't logged in. So no Google ranking from those messages. Apparently SP don't think it fair to get Google Rank from forum posting. Needless to say my alexa ranking has plummeted, has all the old link dissappear to. If your forum posting, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Its goodbye to SP, I'm back in webmaster-talk, where I hope to right useful messages and get back links at the same time.

Let me get this right...you posting on forums, just so you can link drop your signature? AT worst, that makes you a spammer and at best, thats makes you a fluff posting. People like you are ruining forums. I ban dozens of people like you from my forums every day. Posting to link drop is NOT welcome by any forum administrator. Posting for the good of the community is very welcome.
Good on SitePoint for taking this stand. I have the same policy on all my forums the sooner all forums do the same the better. Lets get rid of the fluff posters. Perhaps WMT should do the same.

True, but you know there are many really experience gurus in SITEPOINT, and that's why peopel come. They ask question and seek hlep and offer help, they don't want to be spammed!

It's kind of ridiculous to post in forums just for backlinks. If that's all you're after, then forum posting is the least effective strategy because even on the ones that are do follow the backlinks are not worth much at all.

What a load of absolute nonsense! You should post because you want to be a part of the community. Come to any of my forums with that attitude and you will be banned within minutes.

I could say thanks for letting us know you're only here for the sig links. It makes the job of moderators and admins easier.
But I can see you do make legit posts and are contributing. I don't think you're here to spam anything. What happened to you at Sitepoint is just one reason why forums aren't really a good way to build links. In fact no matter what sites links to you there's always a chance they can remove the link or change the anchor text or anything else that may not be what you want.
Fortunately sig links aren't exactly the highest quality links so losing them really hasn't hurt you anywhere near as much as you might think.

I post to forums when I have something on topic to say about that subject the forum is about. This might indeed answer to coding questions, computer news. I don't right of topic. Sig links help pay for my time in doing such writing.

Your current signature links won't be doing much good! (HINT: you might want to correct the URL!)

If you just want to get backlinks, I must say its better that you just do blog commenting rather than forum posting. Although there's also a possibility you get your post there deleted..

I don't think it's a disaster. Sig links in SP, even if they are nofollow, are still a good source of traffic.

Forums are communities for the exchange of ideas and conversations, not link dumping. I wish more forums would follow suit
I mod at another webmaster forum and we're currently considering limiting signature links drastically, with the sole aim of deterring link spammers and keeping the place on topic.

Agreed. If you've got something to say on the topic, I don't really see the problem. I also only post if I feel I ahve something relevant to say. But I can certainly understand people being upset by people coming into the forums and dropping a "nice post" here and there just to get their links out there.

Ooh! I can feel the irony just oozing out of the above post
I think http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109686/ might sum up the level of spammers.
