How do I start a chat room?

I am considering starting a chat room in my area of expertise. Where is the best place(s) to get the software to start a top notch chat room? Also where can I read up on the process? Thanks for any and all advice...Tim.

What kind of chatroom are you looking at?
And what programming are you looking at? PHP?

first figure out what language you want to host your chat in, once thats done, for example there's php, ajax, java, and all the like with all different functions. but once you figure out what works for you, then you can go look for them. from there, if you want to customize them, you'll be able to go find skins for it according to the ones you selected

Thanks for the help. I have a lot to learn. I have a vision of what it would be like, but I am still learning even the basic skills you guys have. I will study your answers and what you told me. How hard would it be for a novice to put a professional chat room together?

Droxside: you may wish to do a search for professional chat scripts
then do a search and see if they have any exploits. If not and once you found a provider that provides what you in search for I'd have them install in your website or hosting account for you.

Droxside, just take your time and experiment with different chat scripts/platforms until you find one that works well. Also, remember that you want to take a look at the pros and cons to having one. I understand that you will probably want a lot of people to come chat and have a good time, but you need to make sure you have a set of rules on there which encourage people not to act stupid like offending people as it can create a headache for you since you run the chat.
