I'm about to start up a forum, and wanted to know what people thought about posting in forums as the forum administrator. Obviously, if it's my forum and I'm the only one running it... I should be the admin. But I know the admin title can sometimes be intimidating to some people, and I don't want to discourage people from posting because they see the "admin" in a particular thread.

Does anyone with forum experience think it's better to post under a different user other than the administrator?

I don't think ordinary forum posters would be intimidated by having an admin in a forum. In fact, it's even more engaging. You own the forum so it's natural that you act as the administrator.

Yes and no.

I post as Administrator when I am posting about Admin things; I post under my own name, when I am involved in discussions/debates. Its no secret that I am the Administrator and forum owner, I just don't like getting involved in discussion wearing the Admin hat. I wear the Admin hat for Admin things.

Having said that, most forums I frequent the Admin does get involved in discussions as Admin ... my preference is not to do that; but no one seems to have an issue with it on those forums.

How does Moderator sound? That name is NOT from experience, BTW

This sounds like a good idea. I'm going to try doing it this way and see how it works out.

I don't think they will be bothered if you post as the administrator. I saw other forums where the moderators start a thread, post replies, etc.

I post as admin in my forum and all the members like being so close to the admin.

Whilst I wouldn't post under the username of "admin" I generally do consider it good practise to let others know that an administrator frequents and posts on the forum. Having admins and moderaters sign in daily is also a good way to discourage anyone from attempting to link-drop when they see mods out in force

Think posting regularly under 'admin' shows people that you as the owner are taking a very keen interest in the sites development. Only slap people down when they Spam is my rule of thumb in my own forum.
