Twitter can be useful for SEO if done properly. As with on-site optimization, if the content you're linking to is useful / relevant, mentioning it on Twitter isn't a bad thing. However, since many links are shortened, it's best to correctly describe the links (rather than just posting links). As un1tek84 nicely put it,

Also, links to your own site(s) shouldn't be the only purpose for using twitter, because, as others have pointed out, it's easy to spot and discourages followers.
