I enjoy using twitter to try and get more traffic to my site. Sometimes it works. I'm learning how to balance being interesting...vs....not.

I was amazed by twitter in the beginning, now I am forcing myself to use it. But it does allow you to follow people you want to know more about. That's what I find is great about it.

I'm thinking about using Twitter on an ecommerce site at the moment. When a user completes the checkout process they'll be given the (non-compulsory) option of including their Twitter username. It'll be stored in the database and the customer sent a private tweet when their order is shipped.

Has anyone here tried this before who would care to share your findings and results?

One thing which I like about twitter is that I can make a search based on a particular keyword being tweeted right now and then build a community based on it.

That is actually a very good use of twitter.

A non-intrusive but, useful way to send a user a message they actually care about receiving.

I like it

I like it too. It could expanded for other kinds of optional notifications as well.

Did anyone buy Perry Belcher's "Social Media Money System"? It's all about using Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace for profit. I couldn't afford it ($997) and was interested in hearing from someone who did. Anybody?

OK people, I get it - twitter CAN be used as a great marketing tool BUT, i still don't get the attraction of it as a social aspect. I guess I just don't like the idea of everyone knowing where I am and what I'm doing thru - out the day. I'm pretty much a private person. I have lots of friends that I don't stay in constant contact with and I like it that way. Twitter seems (to me) that the usage of if as a social tool to make friends, and put yourself in a position to be "followed" daily is a bit creepy. It seems to so contrived and desperate.

HOWEVER, there are people in this thread whom I've been reading their posts and suggestions for several years now, and I greatly admire their intelligence, experience and personalities. (LNR and VanGogh are two of them) So perhaps I'm just not fully understanding the social benefits yet. I'll have to give it more time and wait -n- see I guess.

Just recently I've been warming up to idea of FACEBOOK. I still haven't joined yet. But, I am beginning to think about the good aspects of it much more so than the negatives. (the privacy and the virus issues). I know I have to get myself out there more if I want to get my business going so I'm trying to be the open person I say I am and just do it. I just don't seem to have the time right now....

Joni thanks for the compliments. The thing about Twitter is you only participate when you want. People will only know what you're doing and where you are if you're telling them.

When I first joined Twitter I didn't really get it. It seemed kind of silly to me. Who really wants to know what I'm doing all day and why do I care what other people are doing. The more I've used Twitter the more I appreciate it's benefits.

Even though the site still asks the question what are you doing now, that's not how people use it. I can't recall the last time I tweeted something like what I was going to have for dinner or where I specifically was. Twitter becomes more useful if you use one of the desktop clients since they have a lot of features you won't get by using Twitter through the site.

One nice feature many clients now have is the ability to organize people you're following into groups or lists. I create groups for friends and then I tend to group people around the industry they're in. I also have groups set up to follow news like the NY Times and CNN and some of the local Colorado papers. That helps manage things since above a certain number it's very difficult to follow so many people. Now I can always pay attention to friends while still ignoring others if I don't have the time.

One of my favorite uses for Twitter is for market research. Many of the clients will let you set up a search for a particular word or phrase. Then you can see every tweet that mentions the word or phrase. For example I work with WordPress a lot. I've set up a search for 'wordpress themes' When I look at just that search I can see what people like about themes, what they don't like, what they wish a theme included. That helps me decide what to include in a theme I'm developing.

The search also helps me see what help people need. Sticking with the wordpress themes example I can see when someone is having a problem with their theme and I can provide a quick answer. That can lead to more people being aware that I work with WordPress. Some will follow me, some might subscribe to my blog, and some might even end up contacting me outside Twitter on the way to becoming a client. I actually haven't picked up clients through Twitter, but I know people who have simply by answering questions in their area of expertise.

Another way to use searches to to help generate ideas for blogging. I've set up some searches around some common design terms and can see what people are currently saying about the topic and what they'd like to know about the topic.

When it comes to networking for me it's mostly a way to strengthen relationships I've started elsewhere. Imagine an offline equivalent. You meet someone at a bookstore and have a short conversation. You may never think anything of it. Now imagine you run into that same person while sitting and having a cup of coffee. Maybe you have another conversation, but this time you do think a little more of it. Another day you run into that person coming out of a movie and maybe the next day you see them at the supermarket.

The more you keep running into that person in different places the more likely you'll develop a relationship beyond that initial conversation. To me all social networking sites work that same way. I have developed some online friendships with people after connecting with them in a variety of places. Twitter, Facebook, StumbleUpon, a forum, etc.

As far as the time involved I don't spend all day on Twitter. It's hard for me to work and IM at the same time and Twitter is similar to IM. I leave it open in the background and in between projects I'll see what people are saying. Maybe I join a conversation for a few minutes or post a link to something interesting. I might follow some links others have posted. That probably all happens in a few minutes and I'm back to work. Some days I don't even open a Twitter client at all.

In the end it's just another tool and the more you use it, the more you'll find ways it might be useful to you. Maybe Twitter won't be something that you find useful and that's ok too. You don't have to use every social site out there. There are plenty I don't care much for and there are others I discover I enjoy.

All I can say right now is WOW!!!! Ok that's not actually true I can and will say a lot more....lol.

Steve, thanks so much for the great explaination. I've never heard anyone explain Twitter this way before. I listen periodically to this one talk radio station that does a weekly hour on tweeting. I haven't heard anything like what you just said. All I've heard is the social aspect and it isn't positive. But this.... this is a whole new ball game and it has really opened my eyes to how usefull it can be. I honestly had no idea....
thanks so much for adding this. It really does deserve some better consideration from me and now that I know what I learned from you I will have a much more open mind to a future with it. I do have questions now - is it true that Tweeting can only be done in 2-3 sentences? I heard that the size or weight of messages is extremely small - like 15kb's or therabouts is that true? And can you send documents or pictures?

When a user completes checkout you could also give the customer an option to "Tweet about your purchase". People are much more likely to click on a link if a trusted friend has recommended your website, more so if they have made a transaction themselves and consider your site to be safe.

Glad to help Joni. There really is a lot more to Twitter than it first seems. You may or may not find it all useful, but you do have to try it to see.

You're posts or tweets are limited to 140 characters (including spaces). The limitation is due to SMS, since Twitter was meant to be used on mobile devices like phones. It can be an art to learn to write tweets. In fact one benefit of Twitter is that it can help you become a better writer, by forcing you to write concisely and choosing words well.

You can add pictures and video I think, but it's done through 3rd party applications. I don't believe you can add either directly through the Twitter site. Definitely find a desktop client for Twitter. If you do a search for 'twitter desktop clients' you should find a lot. I've tried a few and experiment with new ones all the time.

I know you can do it on a pc - but I'll have to update my phone before I get into something like this. I'm probably the only person in America that is still using their first cell phone....

FROM 6 YEARS AGO!!!

I've always resisted technology.....except when it comes to the internet!
ha - maybe I should make that my signature
