I have heard about Twitter and I may decide to join it later on!
It seems like a really good idea and I hope I can use it without getting to addicted to it.

I'm a little afraid to try. I had to get a second monitor to put all my IM windows on so I could see my work...the last thing I need is another distraction!

Thank you very much for that writeup because to be honest until the moment before I read that I just did not get it.
Now I do
P.S. what's the best Twitter gadget for google homepages? Since twitter is blocked at work for me too.

I think if you ask different people what they get from Twitter you'll get some different answers, but for me it's been a great networking tool. I've gotten to know people I didn't know before and strengthened connections I had with people who I did know before.
I also see a lot of information posted on Twitter before I ever come across it elsewhere. I also see a lot of information posted I never would have come across because I wouldn't have been looking for it.
The microblogging aspect of Twitter leads to some very interesting thoughts at times.
Like I said for me it's been the networking and community aspects. There are evenings where I'm sitting around and just watching a game. I'll see someone else post to Twitter about the same game and I know we're watching the same things. Seems trivial, but it does create a bond. We can each share a few thoughts about the game, the sport, our favorite teams, etc.
Where that helps is just like any other community where you get to know people. You have a tendency to pay more attention to what that other person says elsewhere. That can and does lead to links and marketing opportunities.
LNR the easiest way to get started is to follow a few people you know or want to know and just listen to what they say. Then when you're ready simply start tweeting. At first it will seem like no one is paying attention, but they will as you tweet more.
You gain people's attention by sending them an @reply. People notice when other people specifically send a message to them and before too long you're part of the conversation.
If your phone can get the web you don't need to do the text message thing. I just go to the mobile version of the site on my phone and don't pay for text messaging. I use Twhirl as a client on my desktop.
Twitter might not be for everyone, but it really is a great communication tool.

Hey George, I can't get to Twitter itself because of IT blocks, but the Twitbin extension on FF works for me .. at least for now -- you might see if it works in your environment.

BitterSanta - you need Trillian - one place to log into many IM programs - ONE contact panel !

George you can pull Twitter into gTalk and I see a lot of people using it and swearing by it.
I'm using Twhirl, which is a desktop client on top of Adobe Air. Most people on Windows are finding it to be the Twitter client. I think TwitterFox is the popular client for Macs.
One of the things I like about Twhirl is when you post it posts to other services like Pownce and Jaiku and if you do have a desire to join a lot of services it makes things easier.
Like all social communities it's only as good as the community. A big part of why I like Twitter is many people I want to talk to are there. If no one else you want to talk to is on Twitter it's not quite as useful.
I came across another really good explanation of Twitter last night, which is worth a read.
I've been thinking of it like a stream that flows with you or without you. When you feel like it you can wade in at any point and become part of the stream. If you don't feel like being in the water anymore you can easily get out and sit on the bank and watch the water flow by. And at any point you can walk back home.
IM to me is distracting. I have a hard time working while IMing. Twitter on the other hand is kind of like IM, except the conversation doesn't need me to be present so I can leave at any time while the conversation continues and then come back to it when I want.

Took me a while to get on it too.. I spend a lot of time on IRC so it wasn't a huge jump for me..
I've become a huge fan of Twhirl.. Probably wouldn't use twitter without it..

I tried a few ways to access Twitter when I first signed up, but Twhirl quickly became my favorite.
The majority of people still use the site directly if you can believe it.

Personally I still don't get Twitter but maybe it's because I don't use it that much. I have an app on my Wordpress that updates Twitter automatically everytime I post something and if I were to update Twitter on the site it would post on my blog so I think it's a useful tool if you take the time to use it and learn about it! Maybe I will someday!!

Mel Twitter is one of those services where it's hard to see its usefulness until you're actually using it. I didn't see any value for a long time and then I joined and now I use it every day.
I won't say it's for everyone though. It depends on who you are and whether or not people you want to communicate with are also using the service. It's worth checking out and following a few people to see if it's something that interests you.
One think I'll say about posting your blog posts. Unless you're active on Twitter I wouldn't expect a lot of traffic to your posts. You will need people following you and most people want to see more than just links back to your posts.

Interesting. Reminds me of Up2. Or whatever that other website is called. Very similar to Twitter, but image based. I'm not sure which came first, but whatever.
Interesting though, I signed up.

I JUST starting using Twitter. Looks like it might be kind of fun so far. Also a good way to stay in touch.
I don't have any followers yet.

I find Twitter pretty fascinating lately. The benefits, to me, are the ability to share information, communicate with people, get news quickly, and discover new ideas and insights. The really is so much more to it, though. If you find the right friends, it can be a tool that can be used and you can benefit from a *lot.*
