In a previous episode of The WLDS, Lee mentioned that he doesn't start selling adspace; or put up ads on; forums until they've reached 500-1000 uniques per day.

Does anyone have any different views as to when a good time to start selling adspace is?

Thats a good question, and unforunately none of my forums have ever been succesful enough to have any interested buyers, so I've never had to ponder this. (lol)

i sell space, but I get really crappy prices for what I sell. I'm selling banners for $5, and when I sell them on ebay they have gone as low as $1.25. Thats for my forum which has had 21k uniques this week.

That sucks right? What am I doing wrong?

I'm sure Lee could sell ads whenever he wants. However, to him, it's all chump change until he can start charging high amounts of money ... otherwise, it isn't worth his while IMO.

Another thing is that some people may not feel right seeking advertisers immediately after a forum opens. It feels more as if they did it to make money, then actually caring about the community.

But you'd have to ask him personally.

I was referring to Lee directly because of his suggestion of 500-1000 uniques, not because of his status within the web dev community.

I'm looking to see if anyone has anyone's opinion differs to Lee's, or whether his suggestion is an ideal time to start selling.

Most of the big board and successful forum owners I talk to say it looks amateurish and silly putting up any sort of ads on a site until it has a healthy community and momentum going. I believe that too. If the site is still fresh and doesn't have a constant stream of posts and visitors, you'd probably be better off with some affiliate program. Sell something related to the theme of your site.

I agree with MrX above.

It is always better to sell ad space once the site gets some good number of visitors.

Well it IS a lot easier to make money from selling adspace when you have a lot of traffic compared to when your just starting out. Ive had most luck selling space via ebay.
