Could you elaborate on what you are referring to when you say "owned" or "leased". Are you talking about a vBulletin license?

Owned license all the way if you plan on being around long term. The investment is a good one.

Get owned! It pays for its self after 2 years of use.

And if anyone is looking to sell an owned license please PM with what you would like I may be gone until Sunday Aug 27th though.

There is a reason phpbb is free.. It's also not very secure.

Stick with vBulletin and go with the owned license. The leased version is not worth it. If you are gonna go, go big, and go all the way.

I have never had a problem with phpbb. Just because it is free does not mean it's not good. However I plan to upgrade to Vbulletin if I see my forum really growing. But go for owned. It's a better investment.

Well owned is fine, but if you are starting out, leased isn't exactly a bad thing. I've leased forums before and haven't had problems.

I suggest getting a leased licence for the first couple of months to see how things work out. There's always a possibility that you decide to can the project or it just doesn't work out. The first month or two are crucial to getting really "into" managing a project, so a leased licence should be better in that "test" period. You can always buy a owned licence when you're sure you're going to need it...

Go with a owned license. I have some leased ones that I now regret I did not buy directly.

Leased is no updates or any of that and you have to pay each year. Owned is updates for a year and then if you pay 30 a year after the first year, you get updates for each additional year.

If you get owned and want to sell you usually can get a good price around $120+ which is what the leased forum would have used out of your money.

And you cant trade leased forums so the money you put to that would go to waste if you decided not to further the project

The smart way to go is to get an owned vBulletin license instead of a leased one. An owned license is permanent and doesn't cost much, but a leased license expires, and once it expires you'll have to pay for it again or upgrade to owned. You will save yourself time and money if you just purchase an owned license.

A vBulletin owned license is your best option. There's no point paying yearly for something, when you can pay a little extra and keep it forever...
