I am planning to make a drop card (and distribute or leave it in public places such as restaurants and etc) with my website url in it for everyone to read (as one way of advertising my site) and would like to ask your opinion if it's a good idea or if anyone here have try it and if it really work.

Generally speaking, most restaurants and small businesses will not let you come into their establishments and solicit their customers. The best ways of going upon using a business card to promote activity in business and/or websites is by finding local businesses that tend to the same related area that you are trying to promote. Then go in and ask if you can leave your business cards for others to pick up. Another way is you can pin a few of your business cards to bulletin boards. Most grocery stores will have these for local advertisements when you first walk into their stores.

Instead of doing it random why not join a local association where potential clients are. Ex. look up trade association in your community and go to a meeting and meet people who are looking for your services.

Good Luck mate.

Yup, this is still happening and I think it still works

If you're using this approach, the golden rule is to make sure you have a handful of business cards wherever you go.

Some great places to drop your cards are hair salon, convenience store, at a bar while you are still not drunk, one of the counters in the bank, business and payment centers. For me, the best dropping place is the airport!

sneaky marketing works!

If you do it, remember to make a very clear offer on the card. Something that compels people to read it and then take action. Also strongly agree with distributing somewhere your potential customers are (even better if they are already spending money on related services).

Hey Daisies,

What business sector are you in? I would be interested to see card dropping works. I imagine the conversion rate is pretty low unless your card has a detachable discount voucher. Good luck.

I still see it a lot and I actually use it myself. The process is hard as you need to find restaurants and places that will allow you to drop off the business cards. I saw huge increases in clients though.

What I found easiest was to go to places relative to your business (but not competing with) and ask if it’s okay if you leave a stack of business cards. Usually I offer to do the same for them and it’s merely an exchange of cards. This way it’s a win-win for both parties.

I have two cards, one is very professional and the other is like a little ad.

They are for two totally different times and reasons.

Usually people will take it if they need it and usually not high demand enough . Maybe you might put a huge banner ads beside to show why they need to take your card or what you offer able to help them . Then they might just interested to get it .
I been see lot of namecard place in front desk of hotel, information counter of office and shopping complex, restaurant and even at the roadside or telephone booth .
But the respond which not high .

I use CardFila.com to collect all business cards on iPhone because it is so easy to collect, find and use any contact at any time.
You can access the contacts everywhere without Internet connection by using CardFila for Mobile (iPhone or Android phones). I also can do this on Android, computer, laptop. As i know, they will award 100 free coins for accounts registered within Nov 2012!

You can put catchy phrase/s on your business cards that will catch the attention of your target market.

i do suggest making business cards out of the norm and preferably with an additional use. For eg. i have a client that deals with consumer cooking gas, i advised them in making magnetic name cards with their order hotline for all sales and delivery staff. Lotsa people started using the namecard as a fridge magnet, and with this additional use, my client started gaining lotsa new customers. Saving tens and thousands of dollars on brochures every year, he established a stable business with a strong marketing msg at the right place and the right time(cooking gas needed in the kitchen, thus the fridge magnet always reminds subconciously).
