In our continual effort to combat spam we have decided to implement a few new rules.

1) All posts by members with <5 posts must be approved by moderators

2) All members must have >10 posts before the can PM other members

We believe these two rules will help dramatically in reducing spam content on Tycoon Talk. We continually are improving how we moderate in order to manage Tycoon Talk the best we can.

On this matter I would like to suggest 30 quality posts minimum before signature shows up.

And before anyone says they think this is too harsh, go have a look at some other forums (like DigitalPoint for example).

I agree with the quality idea...
Eliminate some of the "I agree" posts......
And 30 seems to be a good number.....

I'm thinking that telling users they need x number of posts before they can have a signature will actually increase the amount of junk posts. It encourages users to post even if they don't have anything to contribute in order to get a signature.

Users that are only here for the signature links tend to end up banned at some point anyway.

Maybe so, but at least could catch those junk posts faster before they start spewing out sig links.

Telling people they need >5 posts to not have them reviews by a moderator is pretty much the same thing you just mentioned.

Tell them they need over 5 posts to not have them moderated, will make them post 5 posts, and then start spewing out spam.

Maybe include can't post links in the forums until "x amount of posts" .

When I used vBulletin in the past, I used this add-on for one of my forums that I started, ( if I remembered correctly )

Yes I was considering post count restrictions on sig links also. I want to see how this <5 post for post moderation rule pans out first. Let me know if you guys are seeing less spam or not.

This rule in itself eliminates people just signing up and adding sig links to promote themselves to some extent as we see there first 5 posts before it goes live.

Well, someone failed at moderating:

http://tycoontalk.freelancer.com/new...ing-hello.html

As this member is spamming other forums with the same sig links as here, such as v7n where his link drops were all removed (and they have 30 post limit on live signatures).

Yeh it is definitely something to consider. I just want to see how our initial post count restrictions work out.

We removed his affiliate link in his signature and sent a PM explaining the issue. We will still receive his next 4 posts to moderate before going live so if he continues we can ban if that is necessary.

I see that this has been done.

I'll look over the forums once I have time to check to see if the spam has been reduced,

It would be a good idea for moderators to Google search some of these usernames before approving posts by them.

I knew the one I had linked to in my other post looked suspicious and a Google search found him link dropping over a bunch of forums.

Most spammers will use very suspicious usernames, so I suggest mods check into them beforehand.

And just what makes you think we DON'T???

We dont' all have the spare time on our hands that you appear to have to just sit here 24 hrs/day and research every joker who just comes here to drop spam. The post limits are already helping a lot by stopping the worst of the worst -- the automated bots, the ones that have been burying us in crap for the last few months.
