Definitely must say congrats to the people working for webmaster-talk, you've made it so far and you deserve this so much. However, I can't say that I myself am too happy because I liked the old, non-commercial feel of the WT forums. Everything felt kind of home-y, but now I'm going to assume a bunch of freelancer.com people are going to come. That's also great, more great members with great answers, but I don't know... I'm just not one of those 'yay, change!' people, I guess.

In the spirit of integrating WT into the freelancer.com network, the new owners should really consider posting a contest to redesign WT to more closely match the freelancer.com family of sites' feel and intent, including a name. Sorry to say, but the whole "tycoon" thing neither mates up with freelancer.com's mission nor the WEB aspect of business that should continue to be a focus here.
Always thought WT could use a re-skinning, anyway. Please consider it? I'll do a mock-up. What font is being used in freelancer.com/tycoonTalk? Looks like a variant of FF Cube xx-bold italic, something in the Eurostil family, anyway.

I can't demonstrate, but I can verify by examples:
marijuanadoctors.com - We ranked #1 for the HIGHLY competitive term "marijuana doctors" within one month of our initial launch (about 1.5 years ago)
sparql.com - (offline now) - I created a simple spash page with absolutely no content other than an H1 of "sparql" and a one-liner non-functional search form, and it ranked on page 3 for the highly competitive keyword "sparql" until I took it down.
Cheers.

That's pretty huge - any chance we can know the price paid for it?

Doubtful. My best estimate is ~$100k, probably some (or maybe even all) of that as shares in Freelancer.com, which is likely looking to IPO soon. Makes me wish I hadn't sold MY forum a few months ago... prices just went way up !!!!

And with the exact term in the title, in the body content, in links pointing to it, how does that demonstrate the hostname is the reason for the ranking???

And should we assume that the ONLY place that word was mentioned was in the hostname?

Congrats to both sites on the merge.
I had tried to get some work done on Webmaster Talks advertising forum, but it was hopeless.
Then I found Freelancer and it worked first time.
But I don't think the Tycoon name is a good idea.
Tycoon is for those who are up there already, and there arn't many of them, Richard Branson Donald Trump etc.
Anyway best of luck and its a better name than Skrill.

Arguing over a theory is silly, especially when we have the means to either prove or disprove it. My theory is based on anecdotal evidence, yes, but unless you're willing to conduct the proper scientific experimentation to negate or confirm the theory, the anecdotal evidence we have is the best bet to go on.
Here's my proposal...
Let's go register 2 domain names - one exact match of a keyphrase, and the other near-match. We put similar but not identical content with identical keyword density and keyword optimization, then link to them both from this forum. Hands down, mine outranks yours within 1 month... that's my claim. Prove me wrong. Wanna have a go at it for fun?

Sounds like the overwhelming opinion is daddyWarbucks.com, oh, sorry, tycoonTalk, is not the way to go.
That does not mean in the slightest that the intent put forth by the new owners can't be achieved in user experience, because it can. It just means that Daddy Warbucks and Moby Dick aren't the best iconography to express it.

Tycoon Talk? Really? I can't imagine having joined this forum if that were its name. Unless there were a Rollercoaster Tycoon forum, then maybe.

I might not post a lot on here but I have been a member for a while and it is very nice to see this forum grow but you are killing everything it was. "tycoonTalk"??? Really I thought someone hacked your website as a New Year's joke. Then I thought oh wait maybe they started a massive Roller Coaster Tycoon following. And then "Become a Big Fish? Really??? I mean come on its bad enough you hacked up a perfectly good branded forum with your ugly black header but to add a shoddy logo and a slogan, if you want to call them that, is just a disgrace to everyone who took this site seriously. I will be deleting this site from my bookmarks because you have killed the forum I joined several years ago and enjoyed being a member of, now I will leave ashamed to be a member of a forum with a fish as its logo. congrats on your fishy purchase.

haha, so true, i don't like the new name either. i'm pretty new to the site but i also think the new name gives the wrong impression of the site.
oh well, decision has been made by the powers that be, if they wanted the users opinion they would of asked for it before changing the name!
