This is refering to the .NET framework right? I've used a few applications that use this framework, and they were all great. So let's say I wanted to program using .NET, do I have to learn VB first or does .NET have it's own separate language to learn?

.NET is the framework as you said, and then within that you have a few languages.

Thing thing you wanna look at by the sounds of it is VB.net - pretty easy to learn, and allows you to code desktop apps and web based apps (with asp.net)

As boomers mentioned there are several languages you can use within the .NET framework vb being just one. Some other's are C#, C++ and Java. VB is the easiest language to learn by far (in my opinion) however learning the syntax of C and Java will take you much further in the future.

Another tip that I just thought about is keep an eye on microsoft events in your area. This is a great way to get free software especially since Visual Studio is so pricey. I got a free version of VS Standard and SQL Server 2005 by doing just this (ok so I missed a day of work and had to drive to Boston so it did cost something but the benefits were well worth it).
