Is it possible to have a webpart span multiple zones, kind of like having a table cell span multiple columns? If so can someone point me in the right direction.

Never mind, I've come to the conclusion that this isn't possible as the zones don't act like a table cell but more like a div. Therefore it's not necessarily going to be in a grid/table construct.
