I am primarily a PHP developer and would like to learn the .NET framework; however, I am very confused. Where is the best place to start? VB? C#? C++? Thereis also an Express Edition of Visual Web Developer, what's that all about? They all seem to be exactly the same thing to me.

Coming from PHP with it's C like syntax, I would suggest C# would be the best route.

The express edition is "crippledware" You can only code web applications with it.

That's actually not true. Visual C# Express will let you code Windows Forms (Desktop) applications, class libraries (DLLs), or Console Applications. It may also support Windows Service, I don't remember.

Visual Web Developer Express will only let you code web applications. It also comes with a test server that will run your code if you don't have IIS.

I'd suggest both.

I would certainly recommend C#, it seems to be more of a go forward product for Microsoft. And certainly download the free C# and web developer express editions. If you code projects just yourself, they are ideal. You only really need Visual Studio for team projects or very large projects.

I've developed several sites using just web developer. Also, theres some good learning videos on www.asp.net.

http://learnvisualstudio.net is where I started. They have complete video training solutions to bring you from nothing to everything. I think I paid like $50 for a life time membership 5 years ago and they always add new videos when new technology comes about. Worth its weight in gold.
