what is it exactly that makes this framework so great?

I hear a lot of talk on the playground, I just want to confirm the rumours.

Beats me!

It's great from M$'s point of view because it locks everybody in to the "Microsoft way"

The biggest problem I have with it is that it amounts to "programming by numbers" and any clown who can "drag 'n' drop" or "point and click" can pretend to be a "programmer".

Is that *just* for GUI development, or does that drag-and-drop functionality exist for things other than GUI dev. ? If so, what kinds of things?

For any development, and all manner of components.

this might be another reason: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_Language_Runtime

but, like you have mentioned before: these built-in safe-guards can be deterrents for programmers who want more control.

in C#/.NET you have an option of turning pointers either on or off... which is pretty gravy if you ask me.

Funny how someone who says they don't know much about it can have such a strong opinion on the subject.

.Net allows you to have transferable skills. You can use C# to write a windows forms app (or WPF application), a mobile application using Silverlight, or do what PHP does for the web and built very rich web applications.
Learn one language C# (and framework) and you have the ability to transition between multiple platforms.

Chrishirst, under what context is it all drag and drop? You realize that is Visual Studio and NOT the framework that allows that. You can use notepad if you want, but why not use a tool that takes the tedious parts of development away so that you can focus on things that are more complex?

  3. OOP
  4. cheap licance
  5. write code once, use anywhere
  6. take less time to code from web apps to financial apps to automation. etc
