Hi all.

I run www.straightrazorplace.com. We're a niche site and we're doing pretty well.

But I have more people that want to advertise with me, then I have impressions to sell.. I know it's a horrible thing.

While we're working to increase traffic, it probably won't be huge amounts, due to the size of our niche.. We show a good 5-10 percent growth each month.. But still my advertisers want more.. What's a guy to do?

I've thought about..

1) Double the rate.. Right now I charge $1CPM.. If I double to $2CPM, advertisers will probably keep the same dollar amount, but reduce the number of ads.. So I'll have more to sell.. Unless they get mad and go away

2) I use about the same ad structure as webmaster talk.. One on top, and one on the side.. I've thought about breaking that up into more smaller ads, squares and all.. But that would run competitors side by side.. And I'm not sure that's the best fit either.

3) Any suggestion?

Thanks
David

When you sell via performance advertising networks, you can increase ad revenue as follows:

1. sell more expensive products
2. sell from more sites
3. sell to more targeted users

and extras

4. meticulously keep advertising updated to emphasize all available discounts, deals, special time-limited goodies that your advertisers offer

5. sell on more networks

6. sell in more countries and languages

7. sell in more formats

8. sell on more platforms

9. when all that's run out, sell to totally new markets whom no one's sold online ads to yet

Up until now, I've been selling to online shops in our niche. Not using a service, but directly selling the ad impressions to them. Are you suggesting that leaving that and going to a network I can do better then the $1CPM I'm bringing in now?

Thanks
David

$1cpm would be what exactly? you get paid 1 dollar for showing 1000 ads?

Okay, here's what I get...

For showing 1000 ads, I get 800 clickthrus and I earn 8 cents per click, on average (I have over 2 years of stats verifying the figures so I can be sure)

800 x 8 cents = $64

so yeah, you'll definitely get more than $1 per 1000 exposures

let me look up cpm to be sure (it's so far away from my kind of money I tend to never remember what acronyms like cpm really mean...)

CPM stands for "cost per 1000 impressions." Advertisers running CPM ads set their desired price per 1000 ads served and pay each time their ad appears.

Correct, $1 for 1000 ads.. My CTR rate right now is about .8%. That's pretty low, but that ads have been running for a time, and not changing much.. So I'm not really that surprised..

What network do you suggest? I guess my only concern, and I'd have to try it for a few months is how my audience would respond.. They like having ads by vendors that they buy stuff from.. Ads from Best Buy etc, I'm not sure they'd take advantage of as much.

Thanks
David

don't throw the working income stream away, but test out others, and when you find ones which reliably perform better, then throw the old ones out!

No doubt!!! I'll probably reduce existing ad sales by 10% and give me that to play with.. Then I'll move forward from there..

Thanks
