I have seen many many many sites that are fan sites or forums to discuss specific TV shows or Bands, or the like. Since these usually will get the show or band more watchers I doubt they would mind, but how is this legal?

Is there anything to do to be safe before I would make a fan forum for a tv show?

I don't understand the legal side of this enough to give you the perfect answer, and if you're really concerned it would probably be wise to consult legal counsel.

Generally speaking though, you would probably do well to include a disclaimer on the site that makes it explicitly clear that it is a fan site, does not represent the ideas or opinions of said TV show, and is in no way affiliated with said TV show.

Fan sites can do wonders for a show, but what the network is probably going to be concerned about is profiting from their mark and defamation.

Very well said. Tv shows dont care however I always get permission and in WRITING. It may and usualy takes 2-8 weeks to get back. But it will always work in your favor. As well as putting the disclaimer.

Ok, thanks for this advice. I may create some fan forums for some shows or something but I will ask permission first, and always use a disclaimer.

It's not and they can shut you down in the blink of an eye. Happened before (for example to a lot of Buffy fansites) and it will happen again.
