Lets say for example Everybody Loves Raymond was referred to by ELR by the network and by everybody else.

Does that acronym now become trademarked also?

Can you trademark an Acronym?

yes, however acronyms can not be trademarked but they can become a trademark and are then no longer acronyms

what i meant to say is, that it indeed happens, that casually used acronyms are in fact trademarks from someone else. on infamous example is jdbc (java database connector). this is most often used as an acronym but in fact, this is a trademark from sun. any writer using the term "jdbc" has to point that out.
