EURid, the non profit organisation operating the Internet top level domain .eu, has suspended 74 000 .eu domain names and has sued 400 registrars for breach of contract. This move was prompted by abusive behavior from a syndicate of registrars who have systematically acquired domain names with the obvious intent of selling them. In the domain name business this is called warehousing and is not permitted.

“In this case we are convinced that the domain name holders of the 74 000 .eu names (Ovidio Ltd, Fausto Ltd and Gabino Ltd) are acting as a front for a number of registrars. The domain name holders and the registrars can be regarded as one and the same. Since registrars should only register domain names for existing customers and not “warehouse” the names in order to resell them at a higher price, this is clearly in breach of the registrar contract,” says Herman Sobrie, Legal Manager of EURid.

That's good news, isn't it? If there is someone who understands the topic better than me, could you elaborate on this, please?

It could be good or bad for domainers. If they free up the domains and there are some gems there then its good, if they suspend the names from being regd again then some .eu owners will be hurting. (especially if they banned the names within the registrar)

Then you probably don't like enom. I don't know if they still do this because I haven't used a droplist for a while. Enom would reg all the deleting names, test the traffic and keep the good ones for themselves. Registrars should be restricted for registerring names (for themselves).

Enom is not the only one doing this alot of big registrars are taking advantage of this , some people have recommended that they atleast pay a 25 cents fee so that it would discourage them from doing this, because at the amount they do this at the 25 cents a pop it would add up substantially.

I hate one company rounding up a lot of premium domains and having them site for years unused with a $20k asking price.

I wanted a reasonably shot at profiler.net but I think it was being held hostage for around $900.

I still think that any registered domains without sites should simply be confiscated etc, makes the domain market funner (and more things to trade with)

Yeah, but then for the people who have 1000 names they would lose alot of them and probably sue the registrars. Some people don't have the time to develop or they just park. I used to park, but I am trying to focus on developing more now.

There was a lot of scams going on with the .eu thing IIRC.

Sometimes I wonder if its worth releasing new TLDS...all that happens is the companies that have the existing .com etc get the rights to "their" .eu because its a trademark or something. Whats the point of adding a new one if everyone just gets the same stuff with a different TLD?

Thats like saying people that buy homes and they dont want to decorate them should have there property confiscated or that if you invest in Billboards you should have something on them at all time to make people whom want yours but cant have them happy...
