Do you have a patent or protected trademark?

I am interested to know this, and if you think it has been worth it?

Funny you made this thread, just the other day I was filling out the TEAS form online to copyright something, but then I asked someone and they said the term I wanted to copyright was too general and wouldn't work, so I'd like to know if its worth it as well.

yes, i have one in progress. it can take upto 2 years and will cost you about $1200 if you want a lawyer to do it, or you can do it yourself for about $500.

dont trademark the .com part of your name and you cant trade mark a descriptive phrase like 'lawyer services'

Actually, I got my TradeMark filed by a lawyer including fee's for $650. Again, there is some bad information in this thread. You can TradeMark a descriptive phase, but it's a lot harder and takes a lot longer. I know because I am in the process of doing exactly that.

Thank about it? Why would there be a Trademark on the name American Airlines? After all, that is a description of any Airline based in the US. Then there is the famous trademark on Windows.

A descriptive phrase can be trademarked, but it is a lot, lot harder and takes about 6-7 years to complete.

As for whether it was worth it, I don't know yet. Ask me in 4 1/2 years. ;-)

Copyright is not the same as a trademark. Trademark is used in commerce. Copyright is intellectual property. If you have a brand worth protecting, you need to trademark. If you have intellectual property you have created, it should be copyrighted.

And if you do not have a tangible product attached to the brand you are trademarking, then you can go for a Service Mark (SM). It is basicly the same thing, but on services like providing information or a service online.

Once registered, both a TradeMark and a ServiceMark show up as the (R).
