I have noticed this. It all depends on your supplier.

Back in our office we use Namesco, and a .co.uk can be up and running within
minutes never mind hours. A .com takes just that little bit longer.

Where as, for my own businesses it can take anything up to 24 hours. The only
reason I haven’t moved to Namesco is due to there ridiculous prices.

Best Regards,

Jamie.

Also it all depends how close your supplier is to your isp. If you do a global traceroute to your domain you will notice from some counties it will take up to 72 hours because they are slow to refresh.

That is true. I forgot about that for a moment, but since I am on AOL maybe that’s
why it takes me the full 24 hours.

Best Regards,

Jamie.

Yes its possible although you'd think AOL being one of the larger providers would be updating frequently.

It depends on the registrar and if they maintain root servers.

For instance, new GoDaddy (a.k.a. WildWestDomains for resellers) registrations are almost always instantly available. This is because they maintain root servers that are used by nearly all ISPs for name resolution
