How to create a oval or circle shaded picture

I dislike always using a standard photo in my websites. I want to take a photo and create a transparent shape ( I wish I knew what is is called) of the photo and get away from the square or rectanglure shape of the photo.
Please educate me on what it is called, and how to do it.

Exactly what do you want? Do you want your pic edges transparent? So it would look like the picture edges are fading into the backgound?
