You could try using the colour replacement facility. This allows you to select any colour held within the background of the image, and have it replaced with a colour of your choice - presumably white, in this case.
However, I would suggest practising with the Lasso selection tool. If you set the selection method to 'point to point' and check the 'antialias' option, you should be able to get a fairly neat result by simply clicking around the outer edge of whatever you want to remove. There is also the added option of including a 'feather', which eases the edges of the cut out and softens the part of the graphic that remains.
