Thinking of trying out PSP but don't want to bother if it doesn't have:

1) Layer styles (bevel, glow, etc.)
2) Image slicing

These tools are invaluable for me in photoshop.

Thanks.

Ryan,

They have both of those features and many more...... PSP is quite powerful with a large user community.

Thanks. As much as I love Photoshop it's quite a price tag so I'm gonna give PSP a shot.

I think you will be happy with the choice. As I said, there is quite a large and active PSP user community who publishes tutorials, tips & tricks, news, etc. One Google search will keep you busy for days.

Enjoy and if you have any questions, I guess I'll see you in the PSP forum here on WT.

Are the layer styles automatically updated like in Photoshop?

For example, in PS if you apply a layer style such as Bevel, and you add/remove from the layer, does the bevel automatically updates to include/remove what is being bevelled?

Also, if you slice an image, is this information saved in the file? I had a quick look at slice but it looked like it was only something defined when you export indicating it had to be redone if you needed to change slice locations...

Thanks!

Yes, the slice definitions can be exported. Actually, I consider that an advantage because if you have several images of the same dimensions that need to be slice in the same way, you need not re-accomplish the task each time. But you're right, I don't believe that it saves the information within the file itself -- it is more of a function to be performed on the image rather than metadata to be saved within it.

Regarding your first question, bevels are typically layer-modification tasks rather than overlay supplements (known as "adjustment layers" in PSP). But you are free to duplicate layers and modify and remove those layers to "undo" the task.

Thanks for the reply. Can you clarify the following for me?

"Regarding your first question, bevels are typically layer-modification tasks rather than overlay supplements (known as "adjustment layers" in PSP). But you are free to duplicate layers and modify and remove those layers to "undo" the task. "

So it sounds like the layer styles don't work the same as PS. In photoshop, a layer style is dynamic.

For example, lets suppose I have a layer with a rectangle on it simulating a button and I had a layer style applied to the layer for a bevel and drop shadow. Now suppose I modify the rectangle to make it smaller/larger/change shape/whatever, the bevel and drop shadow automatically update. I downloaded trial os PSP but didn't see this ability. I *think* you are stating above that it doesn't have the same control but just wanted clarification.

Thanks!

Ryan, that is true to an extent. Obviously you have two types of layers, raster and vector. Typically when I apply a bevel, etc., it is to a raster layer. In PSP, the pixels of the layer are actually modified then that become the new value of the layer. It is not a style which can be applied and removed (such as in PS). However, on vector layers, (shapes which can be drawn and modified using edit points), the behavior is more of what you described in PS.

Hope that helps.
